We spend 14 to 15 years in school and another 3 to 5 in college/university and maybe a couple of more years if we want to complete a PhD. En-route we get not only education but also a treasure of friends. These are mainly classmates, but sometimes they could be teachers or even seniors. I have been fortunate enough to have friends in all the three.
The time duration that I spent with my friends had nothing to do with how close i am with them. Although I can claim that i have more than 25 close friends, about ten would be really close.
One of them is someone who is of my age and although was not in my school/college, we studied together. He smoked his first cigarette in-front of me, wrote his first love letter with my help and started his business with my advise. Now when I look back to the 35 year of association, i recall our secret meeting under the water-tank of his home or the hide-n-seek games that we used to play in the evenings when there would be load sheddings ( Calcutta back then had a problem of power cuts ..called aptly 'load shedding').
Then I have a couple of friends with whom I studied 2 years each. Now even, after 16-18 years, we keep in touch..
I am sure, we get many more friends in life..but the friends with whom we study together form a different bond.
